What is Reiki?

Reiki is a form of hands on healing, with its origins in India and the East dating back many thousands of years to the time before Christ and Buddha. The original name, disciplines and techniques of Reiki were lost due to the traditional method of passing knowledge from generation to generation by word of mouth. Exactly when this ancient art of healing disappeared is difficult to determine. However, we do know that it was rediscovered by a Japanese Scholar and monk name Dr Mikao Usui. It was in fact Dr Usui who fashioned the name REIKI.

The Kanji for Reiki is made of two Japanese ideograms. The top figure is rei, which represents the spiritual source of the universe or the higher mind. This is the higher intelligence of the universe, the same intelligence that tells your heart when to beat and the other organs how to work. Ki is the second character, which represents the primal life energy of the universe. So Reiki can be described as “spiritually guided primal life energy.”

For many thousands of years we have known of this energy and have sought to develop ways to harness its power to heal and influence our lives. The Japanese call this energy Ki. It is also known as Chi by the Chinese, Prana by a number of Asian cultures and the Holy Spirit or Holy Ghost by most of the western world.

The philosophies of most Asian countries include a concept concerning a primal energy that is responsible for the health and well-being of all living things. So all encompassing is the importance of this energy that it is considered to be the manifesting force behind everything that exists.

Because ki is the energy behind everything, it manifests in many different ways. Plants, animals, humans, food, water, air, earth, sunlight, and so forth all have their own kind of ki. There are also different kinds of ki responsible for the manifestation of the various human qualities and characteristics, including our physical bodies, feelings, thoughts, and states of consciousness.

Most of the kinds of ki within the physical body, mind, and emotions are affected by our thoughts and feelings. As an example, if we have positive thoughts and feelings toward ourselves, our ki will be strengthened, and we’ll be more confident, have more energy and enthusiasm, and be more likely to succeed at what we do. On the other hand, if we have negative thoughts and feelings, we are likely to have less energy, be less motivated, and be less likely to succeed.

The mind both affects the quality of ki we have and is affected by ki. Our own thoughts and conscious intention attract ki and build up a reservoir that tends to maintain the mind in a similar state. The mind can also be affected by the ki from other people and from the environment.

Not only do our conscious thoughts and feelings affect our ki, but so do our subconscious thoughts and feelings. This means that the range of ki energies surrounding us can be as varied as the range of thoughts and feelings we have currently as well as those stored in the subconscious mind (along with the effects from other people and the environment). This relationship between our mind and ki plays an important role in the quality of health we experience and in the kind of life we live.

Reiki is also a type of ki. It is ki that is guided by rei. Rei is the higher mind or higher consciousness. It is free of negativity and is filled with compassion, love, peace, wisdom, and every worthwhile quality. It knows the cause of every dis-ease and difficulty and also knows how to heal them. Some might also call it God, God Consciousness, etc. It represents the oneness of all that exists.

Therefore, a good definition of Reiki is that it is “the primal energy of the universe being guided by the highest wisdom of the universe.” Because of this, Reiki cannot be affected by our conscious minds or by anything negative. It can only create good. This is why Reiki is such a wonderful healing energy.

One of the most important purposes in considering what Reiki energy is would be to help us establish greater confidence in the fact that it does exist and that using Reiki can not only create uplifting subjective experiences, but also provide a very practical technique to solve both major and minor issues in our lives, thus giving us an increased level of confidence in achieving our goals and living our lives with health, success, and happiness.

The skills and techniques associated with Reiki are simple and easy to learn. Small children and adults can equally comprehend and incorporate this ancient form of healing into their lives. Regular contact with Reiki will bring the recipients mind body and spirit into balance. It will also help prevent future creation of illness and disease.

Many people believe when you are ready to embrace the principles of Reiki you will be guided to a teacher. I personally believe that Reiki with its infinite wisdom and unconditional love seeks out the person when they need it most. This is true of my own experience and introduction to Reiki.

Many cultures have developed techniques and disciplines that stimulate the flow of KI energy around the body. However, Reiki is the easiest to learn and administer. The techniques are simple to master. The results are profound.

How does Reiki Work?

Reiki is channeled through the hands. When you place your hands on your own body, or the body of another person for the purpose of healing you connect with the universal life force. The wisdom of Reiki then goes to work to bring about healing, balance and whatever is needed on a holistic level.

A full Reiki treatment reopens the chakras and re-balances the flow of the universal life force around the body. This will stimulate the body’s immune system and natural healing abilities.

Experience the feeling of your true self beneath all the ‘stuff’ in our lives – feel peace, calm, compassion, silence, stillness and happiness come from within through reiki.
